Car Window Smashed? Here’s What to Do

Reading Time: 3 minutes

There’s no worse feeling than walking over to your car only to find that a window has been smashed, and unfortunately it’s not all that uncommon, particularly for those who have to park on the road.

If this has happened to you – we feel for you. We understand that you’re probably feeling extremely frustrated right now, but reading the following guide on the next steps you should take could help things go a little more smoothly.

Has your car windscreen been smashed and you need a reputable windscreen repair company to help?

1. Document the scene

Unless the event was a freak accident, like a branch falling from a tree, then you can safely assume your vehicle has been broken into. Before you go looking to see what valuables may have been taken, you need to document the scene. Get your phone out and take several pictures of your vehicle as is, this is something that you can later give to the police.

Once you’ve snapped a few pictures, try to work out whether anything has been taken. Even though thieves may have been trying to get something from inside the car, be sure to check whether anything has been removed from the exterior too, as it’s not uncommon for things like bumpers, number plates and side mirrors to be stolen.

2. Get all of your details to hand

Before you call the police, make sure that you have all of the necessary details to hand to make the call as efficient as possible. You will need:

  • Your driver’s licence
  • Your car insurance details
  • And your vehicle’s registration

3. Report it to the police

Once you have documented the scene and got all of your details to hand, it’s time to call the police and file a report. If you prefer, you can also go to your local police station and file the report in person. Try to remain calm and give as much detail as you can. The more the police have to work with, the more chance they will be able to find who did it and bring them to justice.

4. Cancel your bank cards

If your wallet or purse has been stolen, then the next step you need to take is to call your bank and cancel any cards that were in there. The last thing you want is for the thief to be able to spend your hard earned money.

5. Claim on insurance

If you think this accident is something your insurance will cover, then give them a call and make a claim. Not everyone has the same coverage, so this won’t work for everyone. This might also end up causing your insurance to increase, so you will have to decide whether you think not paying the upfront cost is worth it.
