How to know if your windscreen needs replacing

The problem with windscreen damage is that it’s not always clear whether the whole windscreen actually needs replacing or not. Here are some quick and simple ways that you can tell if your windscreen needs replacing, so you can make the necessary arrangements with us.

  • Larger than a £2 coin: If the crack in your windscreen is longer or covers a larger area than a £2 coin, then there’s a good chance that your windscreen will need replacing. Of course, when you bring your vehicle to us, we will be able to make sure that this is indeed the case.
  • Damaged inner glass: If the safety glass that sits in between the two glass sheets that make up your windscreen has been damaged, then this means that your windscreen will need replacing. This safety glass is very delicate and can’t simply be repaired using traditional techniques.
  • Too close to the edge: If the damage sustained by your windscreen is very close to the edge (specifically within 3cm), then this means that a full replacement will be necessary.
  • In the driver’s line of vision: No matter how small the damage is, if it obstructs the driver’s visual field in any way (10mm to be precise), then this means that your windscreen will need to be replaced. A clear visual field is absolutely vital to ensure that drivers can spot hazards in plenty of time.
  • On the windscreen’s interior: If the damage to your windscreen has occurred on both layers of glass, or if it has occurred just on the windscreen’s interior, then unfortunately a full replacement will be necessary.
