When Do Windscreen Pillars Cause a Serious Disruption to Your View?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

If you’ve recently been studying for your theory test, you may have seen some odd questions surrounding windscreen pillars. Luckily for you, the 1st Call Windscreens team is here to answer them! No need to waste any time – let’s dive straight in.

What are windscreen pillars?

Windscreen pillars are the upright metal frames that frame your windscreen. Your vehicle also has three other sets of pillars that sit between the side windows and either side of the rear windscreen.

Each of these windscreen pillars is labelled with a letter. Your main windscreen pillars are A pillars and your side window pillars are B and C pillars, with B referring to the middle pillars and the C pillars being positioned slightly more towards the rear. Finally, you have D pillars, which are the pillars that are either side of your rear windscreen. Take a look at the image below to get a better idea of what we’re talking about.

These pillars, or posts, are there to keep your windscreen secure in the event of a collision. However, not all windscreen pillars are the same in terms of thickness, so some may be more likely to cause a visual obstruction than others.

When do windscreen pillars cause an obstruction?

One of the problems relating to windscreen pillars is that they seem to be getting bigger. This is largely due to the increase in popularity of 4x4s and SUVs over the years and how thicker windscreen pillars need to account for larger windscreens, and also because thicker pillars will ultimately contribute to an improved vehicle safety rating.

blind spots for windscreen pillars

The problem, then, with larger windscreen pillars is that they will be a more prominent visual obstruction for drivers, creating bigger blind spots.

When driving on a straight road, windscreen pillars don’t cause that much of a problem, as you can rely on what you can see through your windscreen as well your rear view and door mirrors to inform your driving decisions.

The problems begin when you drive around bends or roundabouts, or through junctions, as it’s much easier for other motorists to become hidden in those blind spots when you’re turning. So, when it comes to your theory test, remember this: windscreen pillars become an obstruction when you’re turning!

You may also find the question phrased in the following way: “when emerging from junctions, which is most likely to obstruct your view?” In this scenario, you would select the answer “windscreen pillars”.
