How to Keep Your Parked Car Cool in the Summer

Reading Time: 2 minutes

We’ve all had the unpleasant experience of sitting in a hot car. During the height of summer, getting into a car that has been sat in the sun all day can be overwhelming – so it’s beneficial to know how to avoid it.

The reason the interior of cars get so hot is due to the greenhouse effect phenomenon. This is where hot air enters the car and becomes trapped, thus increasing its temperature.

Keeping your car cool in the summer can be tricky, however, there are a number of ways you can achieve this.

Try and park your car in the shade

If you’re out and about on a particularly hot day then it’s worthwhile parking your car in the shade in order to keep it cool. Even if you have to park slightly further away from your destination to find a shady spot, it’s still worth having to walk a little bit further due to the relief you’ll feel when getting back into your vehicle.

If you have access to one, it is also beneficial to park in a garage as it’ll offer protection from the sun.

Keep certain parts of your car’s interior covered

When it comes to keeping your parked car cool, keeping key parts of the interior covered is one way to prevent overheating. Unsurprisingly, the windscreen and windows are where most of the sun’s heat will enter your car from.

Therefore, using windscreen and window visors are a good way to keep the inside of your car cooler. By putting these in place every time you leave your vehicle, you’re ensuring it remains as cool as possible.

As well as this, a dash cover is a handy accessory to ensure the vinyl surfaces in your car do not become hot to touch. If you’ve been unable to find some shade to park your car, then it is a good idea to place a small towel on your steering wheel. This will prevent it from being hot to touch when you return to your car.

If you have any possessions in the car that may be at risk of sun damage, then think about covering them with a towel or place under your seats to keep them safe.

Keep your windows slightly cracked open

If you’re looking for ways to keep your car cool in the summer, you may be tempted to leave your vehicle’s windows open when it’s parked. While we wouldn’t recommend keeping your windows completely down, (as this could attract thieves), it is worth cracking them slightly. This is a good way of encouraging ventilation throughout the car and lowering temperatures. You can even keep the windows open as you start the journey as a quick way to cool down the car’s interior.

If you’re not keen on opening your windows at all, another solution is to simply open your car door for a few minutes prior to getting in, this will allow cooler air to enter your vehicle before you begin your journey.
