How Can Weather Affect Windscreen Damage?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

If there’s one point that we would really like to drive home with our blog, it’s this: if you’ve got a chipped windscreen, the damage is only going to get worse if it goes unfixed. There are a number of different reasons for this, such as the sort of driving that you do whilst your windscreen is chipped and the quality of your windscreen. However, what we’re going to be focusing on today is how different types of weather can accelerate windscreen damage, turning those chips into cracks, and those repair jobs into replacement jobs.

How hot weather can damage your windscreen

Although you wouldn’t think it, hot weather can accelerate windscreen damage. This is because, due to the rise in temperature, the material around the glass and the outer edges of the glass heat up quicker than the middle portion of your windscreen. This can cause existing chips and cracks to slowly spread outward.

Another problem associated with hot weather and windscreen damage is when extreme outdoor temperatures are combined with cold temperatures created by the air conditioning in your vehicle. This creates additional pressure that is felt on both sides of the windscreen, and can ultimately lead to further damage.

How rain can damage your windscreen

Unknown to many, your windscreen is made of two pieces of glass with a protective layer that runs through the middle. While this can be extremely useful when it comes to insulating the cabin of your vehicle, it does mean that there is scope for moisture to enter the gap. This becomes a much bigger problem when rain clouds roll through.

If water does get in between the protective layers, you can be sure that any damage to your windscreen will only become magnified.

How cold weather can damage your windscreen

Cold weather can cause a number of different problems for a damaged windscreen, so it makes sense to list them:

Freezing temperatures

When the temperature starts hitting 4°C or below, the layers of glass that comprise your windscreen will begin to contract and become much more susceptible to damage. Frost will eventually enter the chip, and the freeze-thaw process will cause the chip damage to get worse.

Snow buildup

If you allow snow to build up on your windscreen, you’ll be surprised at just how much weight it can add at just an inch thick. So much, in fact, that it could cause an existing chip to develop into a crack.

De-icing process

If you’re trying to defrost a damaged windscreen, you need to be extremely careful. Using anything other than the correct tools and products could easily cause the damage to worsen. But, of course, we would recommend getting the chip sorted before it comes to this.
