Is it legal to drive with a broken wing mirror?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Is your wing mirror damaged, hanging or completely broken off? Are you wondering whether it’s legal to drive with a broken wing mirror? Truthfully, it depends on the extent of the damage.

In this article, we’ll cover the legality of broken wing mirrors, including when it’s legal and when it’s time to stop driving and get them fixed.

Is it legal to drive with a cracked wing mirror?

If the wing mirror damage is only minor, then it is fine to drive with it. However, as your visibility in that mirror will be reduced which can impact your ability to drive safely, it’s strongly advised to fix the damage as soon as possible. Also, if a crack or chip is left, then the damage can worsen if left unaddressed for too long.

The only exception is if your internal mirror is also damaged, as you are legally obligated to have at least two fully functional rear view mirrors at all times – therefore both your wing mirrors must be intact if your internal mirror is not.

Is it legal to drive with a missing wing mirror?

If the wing mirror on the driver’s side is completely missing, or hanging off, then it’s illegal to drive the vehicle. This is due to both safety reasons and the possibility of a hanging wing mirror obscuring the view.

If the passenger wing mirror is missing, however, then both your driver’s wing mirror and internal mirror must be intact and in good condition for you to drive without it.

The consequences of being caught driving a car that does not fulfil these laws means that you could face a fine and points on your driving licence. There is one exception though – if a car was manufactured and first used before 1st August 1978, and which only has one rear view mirror present, these vehicles are allowed to remain with only one wing mirror.

How can you fix a broken wing mirror?

A missing or broken wing mirror should be replaced by a professional company. This will ensure a legally compliant wing mirror that is the correct size and style for your car, and that is fitted professionally. Always check with your insurance company to see if they will cover the cost.
