How to Stop Windscreen Wipers From Juddering and Squeaking

Reading Time: 2 minutes

There’s nothing worse on a long, rainy car journey than windscreen wipers that just won’t stop squeaking. And then of course there’s the added worry that they might just stop working at any moment, because if they’ve been squeaking for a while, they’re probably not in great health.

In this article, the 1st Call Windscreens team will be explaining how to get rid of this problem once and for all, so the only thing you hear on wet car journeys is the peaceful pitter patter of rain on your vehicle!

What causes windscreen wipers to squeak?

Noisy windscreen wipers are caused either by issues with your windscreen or the wipers themselves. For example, over time your windscreen will accumulate dirt and debris, creating friction between the wipers and the glass. This then causes that juddering that we all find so frustrating. And just like your windscreen, dirt will also accumulate underneath your wiper blades, so if you want to really stop the issue, you will have to clean both!

Another problem relating to your wipers is that the rubber in contact with your windscreen may perish over time, making them run less smoothly

Damaged windscreen wipers can also cause damage to your windscreen. For expert advice, get in touch with our 1st Call Windscreens team today.

How to stop your windscreen wipers squeaking

Here’s a quick troubleshooting guide to stop your windscreen wipers from juddering and squeaking.

Clean your windscreen

Nothing out of the ordinary here, simply wash your windscreen with warm, soapy water and then dry with a towel. If you would like, you can also apply a special windscreen glass cleaner with a microfibre cloth, but that’s optional.

Clean your wipers

Simply lift the blades away from the windscreen and get to work cleaning them thoroughly with warm, soapy water. You can use this time to give them a good inspection too and see what state the rubber is in.

Soften the rubber

If the rubber underneath your windscreen wipers hasn’t perished, there is still a good chance that it’s a lot stiffer than normal, which can also cause juddering. To soften up the rubber a little, try rubbing some vinegar along the length of it and allow it to soak in, then wipe away. This should allow the blades to glide a little easier.

Replace your wipers (if you need to)

If the rubber looks like it’s seen better days then it might be a good idea to just replace your wipers entirely. You can do this yourself if you’re confident or take your car into the garage if you’re not.

Refill windscreen washer fluid

Even the cleanest windscreen and wipers will be noisy if you don’t keep your fluid topped up, so this should be another essential check that you make.

Of course, if you don’t feel confident fixing your own windscreen wipers, you can always call a professional who will be able to replace them for you carefully and accurately!
