Car Emergency First Aid Checklist

Reading Time: 2 minutes

You won’t know just how essential a car emergency first aid kit is until you have to use it, so it’s best to be on the safe side and keep it fully stocked up with all of the essentials. But what are those essentials? In this article, the 1st Call Windscreens team will be going through just that.

The box

Let’s start with the box itself. If you don’t have a first aid box, don’t worry. While it would be useful so that any passengers could quickly identify the box as a first aid box, as long as it is you who’s driving the vehicle, any sort of tupperware or art supply box will do – just make sure it’s big enough to house all of the items!

What should be in your first aid kit

  • Hand sanitiser – before you treat any sort of wound, it’s vital that you make sure your hands are clean. This is doubly important during the pandemic.
  • Plasters – adhesive plasters should be one of the first things you put in your first aid box. Cuts can happen anywhere, even while out on a road trip!
  • Tweezers – tweezers are always useful if you need to remove something small or delicate, such as a splinter.
  • Gauze pads and tape – for larger wounds gauze pads and tape are essential to help reduce blood flow and treat wounds in difficult-to-bandage areas.
  • Scissors – If you’re wrapping a wound with gauze and tape, you’re going to need scissors to make sure everything is cut to the right length.
  • Hot and cold packs – essential for dealing with bumps, bruises or worse, hot and cold packs are certainly worth packing in your first aid kit. You’re going to want to find the snap-to-activate packs.
  • An Epi-Pen – not everyone knows they’re allergic to bee stings until they’ve actually been stung, which is why it’s always best to pack an Epi-Pen in your car’s first aid kit.
  • Antiseptic wipes – before you treat a wound, you need to make sure that it’s been cleaned properly, especially since the interiors of vehicles can harbour a lot of bacteria. This is where antiseptic wipes come in.
  • Aloe vera-based ointment – aloe vera is great to help soothe burns, whether it’s from a seatbelt or something more dangerous.
  • Sun cream – when you’re out on the road during summer, it’s hard to escape the sun’s rays (which can be magnified through car windows), that’s why packing sun cream is so important.
  • Insect repellent/bite relief – while we don’t have exotic beasties here in England like you might find in hotter parts of the world, insects that can bite will find their way into your vehicle, especially during summer, so it’s best to pack some insect repellent to be on the safe side.

Remember to pack child and infant versions

If you know that young children will be in the car with you, it’s important to make sure that you pack child versions of the items listed above. This ensures that none of the ointments will be too aggressive for an infant’s skin, and that the plasters and bandages will fit!
