MOT: New Rules Around Coronavirus

Reading Time: 2 minutes

In light of the current pandemic, the government announced a six-month MOT extension for all vehicle owners, effective March 30th. Not only does this stop customers having to visit garages during lockdown, it also means that logistics chains and other vehicle-centric operations can carry on without worry. This much-needed measure will come as a relief to both domestic and commercial motorists up and down the country. Take a read through our article looking into what these MOT new rules mean.

mot new rules from coronavirus

Checking eligibility

If your vehicle was due for an MOT on or after March 30th, and your vehicle is either a car, motorcycle, van, or some other light vehicle, then you are eligible for the extension.

How the MOT extension words

The MOT extension itself is automatic, so there’s nothing that you would have needed to do to make this come about. It would have happened around 7 days before the MOT was due to expire.

So, what does this mean for you?

  • Your vehicle will have a valid MOT certificate for an extra six months
  • You can still tax your vehicle. However, you might need to wait to do this until later on in the month if both your MOT and vehicle tax run out in the same month
  • Your insurance will still be valid
  • Your vehicle’s records will be automatically updated, so the police can see that you still have a valid MOT
  • You won’t get a new MOT certificate with the new expiry date on it

Keeping your vehicle safe to drive

While MOTs have been extended, the government has made it clear that the vehicle owner is responsible for ensuring that the vehicle remains roadworthy throughout the extension period, even if it’s not in use. This means that, when you drive, you will need to check that:

  • Windscreens, side windows and door mirrors have been properly cleaned
  • All the lights are working properly
  • The brakes are working correctly

If you’re not using your car that much, you will need to make sure that you are carrying out the proper maintenance too. For example, you will need to make sure:

  • Engine oil is topped up
  • Brake fluid level is right
  • The battery hasn’t gone flat
  • Windscreen and rear window washer bottles are topped up

When it comes to tyre tread, you need to make sure that your vehicle’s tyres remain above or at the correct tread depth. These are as follows:

  • 1.6mm for cars, vans and other light vehicles
  • 1mm for motorcycles, large vehicles and passenger-carrying vehicles
  • Mopeds just need to have a visible tread dept
