Cleaning your car’s windscreen is not just about making it look good – it’s also essential for your safety on the road. A dirty windscreen can impair your visibility, increase the risk of accidents and just generally make driving much more difficult. In this guide, we will walk you through the steps to clean your windscreen properly and achieve great results.
Before you start cleaning, make sure you have the necessary supplies:
It’s best to clean your windscreen in a shady area or during the cooler parts of the day to avoid the cleaning solution drying too quickly and leaving streaks. Also, make sure your car is parked securely and the handbrake is engaged!
Start by removing any loose debris or dust from the windscreen’s surface. This is especially important if you regularly park your car underneath a tree. You can use a soft brush or a microfibre cloth to gently wipe away the dirt.
Spray the windscreen cleaner solution onto the glass. Ensure it’s alcohol-free to prevent damage to any tinting or coatings on the windscreen. Apply the solution generously but avoid getting it on the car’s paintwork, if possible.
Take a clean microfibre cloth or soft sponge and wipe the windscreen in straight, horizontal or vertical strokes. Avoid circular motions, as they can leave streaks. Focus on one section at a time to ensure a thorough cleaning.
For stubborn stains like bugs or bird poo, let the cleaner soak the affected area for a few minutes. Once it’s had time to work its magic, gently scrub the spot with a soft sponge or cloth until it’s completely removed. Again, if you park your car under a tree or live in a rural area, this step might take a little longer than the others!
Fill a spray bottle with clean water and spray it over the windscreen to rinse off the cleaner. Make sure there is no residue left on the glass when you’ve finished.
For a streak-free finish, use a squeegee to wipe away the remaining water. Start from the top of the windscreen and work your way down in a single, continuous motion.
Before you’re done, inspect your wiper blades for any signs of wear or damage. Worn-out wipers can leave streaks and reduce visibility during rainy conditions. If you do find any damage to your wipers, make sure that you replace them quickly. This just means you won’t have to clean your windscreen again any time soon!
